Viasat, a leading global communications company, is introducing its home and mobile broadband service in Mexico, marking a significant milestone in expanding internet access across the country. In partnership with Mexican telecommunications wholesaler Altán Redes, Viasat is set to combine its satellite and wireless LTE technologies with Altán Redes’ shared mobile network to offer cellular coverage in previously underserved areas.

"Viasat is revolutionizing Mexican communities by providing fast, reliable, secure, affordable, and high-quality internet access. With this service, we are fueling digital inclusion and empowering teachers and students with educational resources, improving healthcare through telemedicine, facilitating communication for families separated by migration, and stimulating local commerce with digital tools,” says Hector Rivero, General Manager of Mexico Broadband, Viasat.

The service is now available in 13 states, reaching over 150,000 people and providing vital internet connectivity to regions that were previously left behind.

Viasat’s advanced broadband service integrates satellite and wireless LTE systems to offer seamless LTE connectivity via satellite. The company’s ultra-low-cost, power-independent LTE towers are strategically placed in remote areas of Mexico, addressing gaps in cellular coverage. These towers ensure that hard-to-reach communities stay connected, even in the absence of a reliable power grid. With the help of solar panels as a backup or primary power source, Viasat’s technology is able to deliver a sustainable solution in areas where traditional infrastructure has been lacking.

According to the US Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration, about 30% of Mexico’s population — over 38 million people — lack broadband access. Viasat’s initiative aims to close this gap by providing high-speed internet to some of Mexico’s most isolated communities. This expansion aligns with the company’s ongoing commitment to increasing digital inclusion in the country.

Since 2021, Viasat has been advancing its mission through the Mexico Ambassador Program, which collaborates with local representatives, predominantly women, to promote digital skills and empower under-connected communities. By equipping these ambassadors with the knowledge to navigate digital platforms, Viasat’s program also fosters gender equality and supports the broader goal of digital inclusion.
