The Mexican Intermodal Transport Association (AMTI) has announced that Mexican and US authorities have approved a new origin verification scheme for the importation of animal protein products, a milestone expected to streamline logistics, strengthen supply chain safety, and boost Mexico’s competitiveness in international trade.

According to AMTI, the new framework will allow sanitary inspections and certifications to be carried out directly in the country of origin, eliminating the need for verification at Mexican entry points. This measure will significantly reduce import processing times, lower logistical costs, and mitigate sanitary risks, while enhancing traceability and transparency throughout the supply chain.

“This new scheme represents a major step toward more efficient and secure trade operations. By shifting inspections to the source country, we can ensure faster and safer entry of products into Mexico, benefitting both producers and consumers,” the association says in a statement.

At this stage, the approved framework applies exclusively to animal protein products, though it could later be expanded to other categories as the system matures and bilateral collaboration deepens.

AMTI says that the initiative is the result of sustained dialogue and inter-institutional collaboration between Mexican and US authorities, private sector actors, and logistics organizations. The association reaffirms its commitment to accompanying the implementation process, providing timely updates on participation mechanisms, and helping stakeholders integrate into the new operational model.
