Uber Freight, Tesla Partner to Accelerate Electric Truck Adoption
Uber Freight teams up with Tesla to launch the Dedicated EV Fleet Accelerator Program, a first-of-its-kind initiative designed to lower barriers to electric truck adoption. The partnership combines Tesla’s technology with Uber Freight’s shipper network, offering fleets subsidized access to Tesla Semis, guaranteed demand, and long-term cost advantages.
By aligning financial incentives with operational support, the program seeks to make zero-emission freight both practical and profitable, reinforcing Uber’s global commitment to building a sustainable transportation ecosystem.
Uber Freight is designing routes around Tesla’s growing Semi Charger network, ensuring charging aligns with freight operations The Dedicated EV Fleet Accelerator tackles upfront cost, revenue predictability, and utilization through several measures, including:
-
Subsidized Price: Fleets purchasing Tesla Semis through the program receive discounts to offset initial costs
-
Predictable Growth: Fleets integrate EVs into Uber Freight’s dedicated shipper solutions under multi-year contracts, providing steady revenue
-
Optimized Utilization: Uber Freight matches Tesla Semis with consistent freight demand, ensuring high asset productivity.
Participants also receive technical guidance from Tesla, including total cost of ownership (TCO) analyses tailored to their operations.
The Tesla Semi offers up to 804.6km of range, 1.2MW fast charging, and payload capacities of 45,000–47,000 lbs. Compared to diesel trucks, EVs provide:
-
Fuel Savings: Charging costs are only 20%–30% of diesel equivalents, saving thousands annually
-
Lower Maintenance Costs: EV drivetrains reduce maintenance costs by up to 40%
-
Competitive TCO: When factoring in fuel and maintenance savings, EVs can outperform diesel trucks over their lifecycle
Uber Freight piloted the program with selected carriers in Northern California. In two months, Tesla Semis logged 19,918km over 394 hours of drive time, consuming just 1.72 kWh per mile with 60 hours of total charging.
Early adopters reported meaningful cost savings and praised the dedicated support from Uber Freight. According to fleet operator New Legend, the partnership gave them the confidence to invest in long-term electrification.
With nearly 18 million annual shipments and strong partnerships with global shippers, Uber Freight is well positioned to lead freight electrification at scale. The Dedicated EV Fleet Accelerator builds on years of EV pilot projects and represents a pivotal step in reshaping supply chains toward sustainability.
“Electric trucking is not just an innovative vision, it is a practical, profitable path forward,” says Uber Freight.
