Geotechnical Services for Sustainable Mining Projects
Q: How have the company’s operations evolved over the past few years?
A: Solum has undergone several transformations. Although we remain a small player in the market, we have focused on adapting to the evolving needs of our clients. Initially, we offered consulting and engineering services, particularly in Geotechnical Engineering. Over time, our scope expanded to include project construction oversight and ongoing design support. Despite challenges like the pandemic, our fully digital infrastructure enabled us to swiftly adapt, ensuring uninterrupted service to our clients. Today, we focus on providing specialized consulting, and managing all aspects of projects, from initial evaluations to specialized areas such as geotechnical engineering and investigations, water management, construction, and environmental permitting. We are also seeing growing demand for compliance with global tailings dam regulations.
Q: How have mining operators' ESG service requests changed in the current context?
A: The demand for ESG-related services has evolved significantly. Mining companies are now taking a much more detailed approach to evaluating projects right from the beginning, particularly when acquiring new concessions. It is no longer a matter of applying a standardized model; instead, there is a shift toward seeking tailored solutions, innovations, and new technologies that can enhance the projects’ sustainability and market viability.
Q: What considerations are often overlooked by companies when requesting environmental permits from SEMARNAT?
A: Traditionally, companies follow a sequence where engineering work is done first, and then the studies are adjusted to meet permitting requirements. At Solum, we have redefined this approach. We begin by collaborating closely with SEMARNAT, presenting technological innovations and project improvements early on. By aligning the engineering process with regulatory requirements from the start, we ensure that permit requests are consistent with best practices and up-to-date regulations, leading to a smoother approval process.
Q: How does your experience help companies improve their relationships with communities near mining projects?
A: Transparency and involvement are crucial. From the beginning, we make it a priority to engage with both local authorities and communities, not just for permitting purposes but also while implementing innovative practices that enhance the sector. By organizing community events and presenting new technologies aimed at mitigating environmental and social impacts, we help build trust and ensure that mining companies honor their environmental and social commitments.
Q: How are mining companies addressing the water crisis, particularly in northern Mexico, and what actions can Solum take to improve water use efficiency in existing mining projects?
A: The water crisis is a pressing issue, especially in northern Mexico. At Solum, we focus heavily on water recycling. For mining projects in this region, we implement water treatment and recycling systems, including the use of filtered tailings and treatment plants that allow for water reuse. Additionally, we work with local communities to utilize drainage and wastewater systems, helping to reduce the dependency on freshwater sources, which is critical for sustainable mining operations.
Q: Can you share any success stories that highlight the effectiveness of your value proposition in the mining sector?
A: A notable success story is the Terronera project, where we collaborated closely with the client to address local community needs. This included improving stream management within the project area, minimizing erosion, and stabilizing impacted areas during the construction. We also designed for long-term operational needs and eventual closure. This collaborative approach has been crucial in building strong community relationships and ensuring the project’s overall success and sustainability.
Q: What are Solum Consulting’s plans for continued growth in 2025, and what steps are you taking to achieve your goals this year?
A: Our 2025 goal is to evolve from an engineering service provider to a fully integrated strategic partner to become a collaborative extension of our clients’ teams. We are working closely with our clients to actively participate in the design and execution of projects, ensuring the implementation of innovative solutions. This collaborative approach will help guarantee that projects are completed efficiently, safely, and in line with growth objectives, further solidifying our role in the mining sector’s continued success.
Solum Consulting Group offers specialized expertise across the complete project lifecycle, including project evaluations, feasibility studies, design, permitting, engineering, development, construction management, operational optimization, and closure.
