Rubén del Pozo has officially assumed the presidency of AIMMGM for the 2024-2026 term, succeeding Luis Humberto Vázquez. Del Pozo emphasized his commitment to continue defending the mining sector and to promote the creation of proper public policies.
During his inauguration speech, del Pozo emphasized that promoting sustainable mining practices, effectively communicating the benefits of mining, and ensuring transparency will be key responsibilities for the entire mining industry.
Del Pozo noted the importance of continuing defending the interests of the mining sector, as it is in challenging times due to misconceptions about the sector. He also voiced strong opposition to President López Obrador’s proposed constitutional reform aimed at prohibiting open-pit mining concessions in Mexico, arguing that the viability of open-pit mining should be assessed based on technical and financial factors related to the deposit and its geological context, rather than political motivations.
“It must be made loud and clear that AIMMGM, the largest and most important mining professional association in our country, opposes this initiative. There is no other mining technique in Mexico or the world that allows us to exploit large-volume, low-grade mineral deposits other than open-pit mining," del Pozo said, adding that mineral extraction is necessary amid the increasing demand for minerals to sustain the energy transition.
Highlighting the economic importance of the mining industry, del Pozo noted its role in generating revenue, creating quality jobs, and supporting community well-being. He stated that open-pit mining contributes to nearly 60% of Mexico’s mining production value. "I am convinced that in unity we will give our best to overcome obstacles and continue making mining a symbol of well-being for Mexicans. This is our time, and it requires the combined efforts, dedication, work, and passion of everyone in the industry. These are times for unity,” del Pozo concluded.
In his remarks, del Pozo acknowledged the achievements of his predecessor, Luis Humberto Vázquez, and Concepción Cortez, who led AIMMGM and the Committee of Women, respectively, for the 2022-2024 term. He acknowledged that during Vázquez’s tenure, AIMMGM expanded its footprint from 33 districts to 37. The Professional Development Center was also strengthened with new agreements for scholarships and professional exchanges with universities in Hidalgo and Coahuila.
Vázquez handed over AIMMGM with healthy finances, leaving the position with an additional MX$9 million (US$466,452) compared to when he began his tenure. He also welcomed the incoming administration led by del Pozo. "I want to thank everyone for their commitment, passion, and support. We have formed a team of dedicated women and men, ready to take AIMMGM to new heights. The association will be in the hands of a talented team that ensures excellent results. You can be assured of my continued support," Vázquez concluded.
The new National Board of Directors (CDN) of AIMMGM includes President del Pozo; Administrative Vice President, Julián Chavira; Technical Vice President, Genaro de la Rosa; Educational Vice President, Ignacio Reyes; Sustainability Vice President, Francisco de Jesús Cafaggi; Vice President of Government and Association Relations, Adalberto Terrazas; Secretary, Luis Thomson; and Treasurer, Ricardo Ortiz. The new regional coordinators are Miguel Muñoz (northeast), Francisco Yáñez (central), Juan Calzada (south), and Mariel Márquez (northwest). Honorary Board members include Manuel Cortés, Salvador Ledesma, Sergio Almazán Esqueda, and Luis Humberto Vázquez.
