Hub Group Prepares Intermodal Route to Mexico
Logistics operator Hub Group has begun operational tests for a new freight transportation route connecting Chicago, Illinois, with the Ferrocarril y Terminal del Valle de México (Ferrovalle) facilities in the State of Mexico. This service promises to streamline trade between Mexico and the United States.
"First, we are conducting tests to ensure that customs processes and others flow adequately," says Eduardo Asperó, Vice President for Mexico, Hub Group. He adds that the Pantaco intermodal terminal in Mexico City is well-equipped to handle this type of operation, although Hub Group had not previously offered services at this location. The company has operations in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, and Silao, Guanajuato.
Asperó says that the company plans to move 1,000 containers as part of a project with a specific client, reports TyT. The first container for this route arrived last week, followed by two more this Monday, with a planned increase to four containers in the coming weeks and then 20 per week.
This new service is carried out in collaboration with Union Pacific (UP) and Ferromex through the Falcon Premium service, which also involves Canadian National to connect Mexico and Canada via Chicago and Eagle Pass. According to Union Pacific, this route is designed for the shipment of automotive parts, food, freight of all kinds, appliances, and temperature-controlled products.
Asperó highlights that the new route will focus on transporting industrial products, many of which are finished goods destined for sale in the Mexican market. He estimates that in about a month, Hub Group expects to have a consistent and proven service. During this time, it will seek to attract clients.
Hub Group has a fleet of 52,000 containers, and its capacity increases based on demand. This new service will not only strengthen the company's operations but also facilitate cross-border trade, benefiting multiple industries in both countries.
