President Claudia Sheinbaum inaugurated the northern access to the port facilities and officially launched construction of the “Puerto Nuevo Manzanillo, Cuyutlan” project. This initiative marks a significant step forward for the region’s maritime infrastructure, aiming to establish Manzanillo, Colima as a leading global trade hub.

The project represents an investment of over MX$63 billion (US$3.07 billion), combining public and private funds. The first phase will involve MX$9 billion (US$439.3 million) of public investment, including MX$1.6 billion (US$79.6 million) from the Mexican Navy, alongside MX$20.8 billion (US$1.02 billion) from private sources. The second phase will see an additional US$4.4 billion (US$215.93) in public funds and MX$27.58 billion (US$1.35 billion) in private investments.

The new port, situated in Basin 2 of the Laguna de Cuyutlan, aims to become one of the most environmentally friendly in the world. Spanning 1,800ha, it is projected to handle 10 million containers annually, placing it among the top 15 ports globally. It will also include two private hydrocarbon terminals, one operated by PEMEX with a storage capacity of 3.7 million barrels, as well as an existing liquefied gas terminal.

Infrastructure improvements in the first phase will include two terminals with over 1,500m of linear docking space for TEUs, a new customs facility connected to the railway, enhanced container storage, and mineral bulk terminals. Sustainability is a central focus of the project, with designs incorporating eco-friendly practices and innovative technologies. The entire development is slated for completion by 2030, establishing a modern, efficient, and environmentally responsible port facility.
