The National Chamber of Freight Transportation (CANACAR) warns that the nationwide road blockades and demonstrations organized by members of the National Union of Agricultural Workers (UNTA) are threatening supply chains.  The blockades began on Monday, October 27, following a breakdown in negotiations with authorities.

According to CANACAR, these blockades are taking place at toll booths and highways across the country, many of which are key logistical corridors for Mexico’s freight transportation sector. The chamber warns that if the disruptions persist, they could trigger severe economic repercussions across national supply chains.

The affected routes are vital for the movement of essential goods such as food, raw materials, fuels, industrial products, and basic consumer items. “Each hour of interruption in road flow results in multimillion-peso losses, reduces productivity for transport companies, and jeopardizes driver safety,” says CANACAR. The blockades also delay deliveries, disrupt essential supply networks, and create congestion and safety risks for thousands of drivers.

The association adds that road blockades are not a sustainable path toward resolving disputes. Such measures, says the chamber, harm not only the transport sector but also the broader economy and millions of Mexican families who depend on a stable flow of goods.

The organization called on federal, state, and municipal authorities, as well as the UNTA, to prioritize dialogue and maintain open communication channels to reach agreements that can restore free circulation as soon as possible. “Only through dialogue can we prevent further economic and social damage,” CANACAR says.
