The World Resources Institute (WRI) México and the Mexican Association of Mobility Authorities (AMAM) are aligning efforts to advance sustainable mobility in Mexico, focusing on infrastructure, electromobility, and transport modernization. Representatives met during the 31st National Meeting of Mobility Authorities (ENAM) to address the role of transportation in the country's economic and social development.

They identified six key areas essential for transforming transportation in Mexico:

  • Mobility Infrastructure: Strengthening urban public transportation and passenger rail systems to improve regional connectivity.

  • Electromobility and Sustainability: Promoting the adoption of electric vehicles and the development of energy infrastructure.

  • Formalization of the Transport Sector: Regulating public transportation and improving working conditions for drivers.

  • Interinstitutional Coordination: Synergies between state, federal, and municipal governments for the implementation of mobility projects.

  • Regulations and Financing: Defining financial schemes and incentives for the modernization of public transportation.

  • Care Mobility: Incorporating accessibility and equity strategies in transportation for women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

The institutions found alignment between the National Mobility Agenda 2024-2030, led by the Mexican Association of Mobility Authorities (AMAM), and the Mexico Plan promoted by the Federal Government.

"The alignment between the Mexico Plan and the National Mobility Agenda presents unique opportunities to transform transportation in the country. Collaboration between state and federal governments is key to achieving this," says Ricardo Serrano, President, AMAM.

One of the main topics discussed at the meeting was the development of electromobility in Mexico and the need to establish financing models for its implementation. "Decarbonizing transportation can contribute to 29% of the reduction in emissions from energy consumption between 2020 and 2050" says Angélica Vesga, Director of Public Affairs, WRI México. She stressed the importance of public-private financing schemes, reviewing the Federal Program for Mass Transit Support (PROTRAM), and creating a National Low-Carbon Public Transport Program.

Other challenges discussed included charging infrastructure for EVs, integrating rail transport with urban systems, and the formalization of the transport sector as a key element for its modernization.

The 31st ENAM concluded with a consensus that mobility must be a priority on the national agenda. AMAM, with the leadership of WRI Mexico, will continue to promote dialogue and coordination among different levels of government, the private sector, and civil society.

"Transforming transportation in Mexico requires long-term vision, innovation, and collaboration. At WRI Mexico and AMAM, we will continue to promote evidence-based strategies to advance toward a more efficient, safe, and sustainable mobility system," says Vesga.
