Fire at Cadereyta Refinery Raises Air Quality Concerns
On Monday, Feb. 19, a fire was reported at the coke plant of the PEMEX Refinery in Cadereyta, Nuevo Leon. The incident, swiftly controlled without injuries, has raised concerns about its impact on air quality in the metropolitan region.
The fire comes amid tense legal and environmental circumstances, with Nuevo Leon's Minister of Environment, Alfonso Martínez Muñoz, disclosing recent developments in a legal dispute between the state and the state-owned company. Martínez Muñoz revealed that Judge Jenny Jahaira Santana ruled in favor of PEMEX in an injunction lawsuit, a decision that the state plans to appeal.
Martínez criticized PEMEX's stance, noting the company's failure to provide evidence of its environmental safety. He also highlighted the negative impact of the fire on the city's air quality, expressing concern for the health and well-being of affected municipality residents.
