UNAM, PEMEX Join Forces to Boost Energy, Science and Innovation
UNAM and PEMEX have signed a General Collaboration Agreement to strengthen scientific and energy development, as well as to foster talent and innovation. The two institutions will collaborate on research, fieldwork, social service, professional practices, human resources training, promotion of university talent, and the development of academic research projects.
Activities will focus on exploration, extraction, processing, refining, transportation, storage, and commercialization of hydrocarbons and their derivatives; production of petrochemicals and fertilizers; engineering and logistics in these sectors; and initiatives related to alternative energy sources, energy savings, and efficient energy use.
Víctor Rodríguez, Director General, PEMEX, emphasizes that this agreement is the direct result of uniting science and energy, thought and action, around a single goal: leveraging the knowledge, experience, and strength of the State to serve the Mexican people. “At PEMEX, we believe in science. We believe in public education. And we firmly believe in cooperation as a transformative axis of national life,” says Rodríguez.
Leonardo Lomelí, President, UNAM, highlights that the agreement enables the university to continue supporting national development by leading initiatives that can usher PEMEX into a new era. “At a time when the challenges of the energy transition, operational efficiency, and sustainable use of our natural resources demand interdisciplinary solutions, UNAM reaffirms its vocation of service to the country, as it has since its inception, through a broad academic and community network,” says Lomelí.
The agreement will remain active through 2030, with the possibility of extension into a new agreement in the future.
