Grupo México. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador informed that Grupo México sent a letter to the government requesting support to establish a dialogue with those affected by pollution in the Sonora River. "They want to dialogue and review the studies made by the Ministry of the Environment to remedy this serious situation."

On Aug. 6, 2014, Grupo México’s Cananea mine reported a spill of 40,000m³ of acidified copper sulfate in the Bacanuchi and Sonora rivers, affecting 22,000 people in seven municipalities that no longer had drinking water as a result.

Grupo México created a US$106 million fund to remedy the environmental and health damages caused by the spill. However, the fund closed after less than 1 percent of the total amount had been used, and therefore no tangible changes were achieved, El Informador reported. Grupo México argued that its Buenavista mine has been a driver of development for Cananea. It has also reaffirmed its commitment to the well-being of the environment and its communities.

New Summit on Migration. The president  announced that representatives from Cuba, Colombia, Honduras, Venezuela, Haiti, Ecuador and Guatemala will participate in the Latin American Summit on Migration. "There is a lot of violence and suffering, we have to address the problem in the communities of origin."

In 2022, President López Obrador met with leaders of Latin American and Caribbean countries, reaching agreements on migration matters. In these meetings, Latin American representatives criticized the US for not investing in the region and stressed that the region will no longer be passive and dependent on the North American country. Instead, Latin American and Caribbean countries wish to unite to face the problem with their own resources.

The new summit on migration is expected to take place on Oct. 22 in Palenque, Chiapas. A total of 11 countries have been invited, but so far it is uncertain who will attend.

Judicial Branch. Elizabeth García Vilchis, Head of the “Who's Who in the Lies of the Week,” segment of President Obrador´s morning conference, said that the cancellation of the trusts to the Judicial Branch will not affect its operation or the rights of the workers.

Last week, the proposal for the disappearance of 13 trusts linked to the Judicial Branch was approved, which seeks to cut more than MX$15 billion (US$836.6 million) in funds. Following the announcement, the National Renewal Union called for a work stoppage, arguing that the proposal affects workers’ labor rights.

In May, Mexicans marched in favor of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN). The march comes in response to the constant attacks by the federal government, led by President López Obrador and figures from MORENA. Accusations of privileges and conflicts of interest have escalated following the annulment of the first part of the 'Plan B' of the Electoral Reform.
