Hurricane Beryl. Laura Velázquez Alzúa, National Coordinator, Civil Protection, reported that the hurricane is located 750km from Tulum. First landfall is anticipated in the early hours of July 5, with the second expected in Tamaulipas on July 7. "There are elements from the armed forces and other agencies to assist in Yucatan, Campeche, Veracruz, and Tamaulipas."
Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Carriacou island in Grenada on July 1 as a Category 4 hurricane, inflicting significant damage. Subsequently, it peaked as a Category 5 hurricane, the highest on the Saffir-Simpson scale. However, the hurricane has now been downgraded to a Category 3 storm.
US Elections. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador wished both US presidential candidates good luck in the upcoming debates and elections. "It is in the interest of both nations to maintain good relations. We will monitor the political and electoral developments closely, and as long as there is no disrespect towards us, we have no reason to take action.”
On June 27, US President Joe Biden and Donald Trump faced off in the inaugural debate of the 2024 United States presidential campaign, where personal attacks overshadowed policy discussions. Post-debate polls indicated that 67% of viewers perceived Trump as the more formidable contender. Meanwhile, concerns about Biden's age are expected to intensify following his poor performance.
Ayotzinapa. López Obrador stated that the meeting with the parents of the 43 disappeared students from Ayotzinapa was positive and announced he will provide them with an information folder on July 8. He added that Claudia Sheinbaum will also meet with them on July 29.
In 2014, during former President Enrique Peña Nieto’s administration, 43 students disappeared in Iguala, Guerrero. The government reported they were murdered by the United Warriors Cartel in Cocula. However, information showed that the Iguala police and army handed over the students to the criminal group. The Truth Commission of the Ayotzinapa case reported that there was an infiltrated soldier among the students, but former Army General Salvador Cienfuegos assured that the army was not involved. Since then, numerous protests have been held to demand accountability.
