Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador met with US officials, prioritizing discussions on the migrant strategy. This meeting comes in the wake of Mexico registering a historic surge in migrants reaching the US border and seeking refugee status.
After a call between US President Joe Biden and López Obrador, the Mexican president said both parties agreed to hold a meeting between US and Mexican officials on Dec. 27, 2023, in Mexico, as López Obrador mentioned during his Dec. 22, 2023 morning press conference.
On Dec. 27, 2023, López Obrador engaged in closed-door negotiations with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, and White House Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall. “We reached important agreements for the benefit of our peoples and nations. Now more than ever, the policy of good neighborliness is indispensable,” stated López Obrador on X, without disclosing the agreements reached during the negotiations.
At the time of writing, the Mexican government has not disclosed the specific details of the agreements reached during the closed-door negotiations. However, Minister of Foreign Affairs Alicia Bárcena stated that both parties agreed to continue discussions in January 2024. López Obrador consistently advocates for an alternative approach to the migrant crisis, emphasizing the importance of addressing its root causes. He has consistently urged for economic aid from the United States to assist Latin America in improving its economic conditions.
The visit of US officials occurs as a new migrant caravan makes its way to the United States, comprising approximately 6,000 people passing through Mexico. It also aligns with the Biden administration's efforts to garner Congress support for an assistance package to Ukraine.
“We are committed to partnering with Mexico to address our shared challenges, including managing unprecedented irregular migration in the region, reopening key ports of entry, and combating illicit fentanyl and other synthetic drugs,” said Blinken on his X account.
Migrant flows in Mexico have surged significantly, reaching unprecedented levels. The National Immigration Institute (INM) recorded over 686,732 individuals with irregular migratory status, the highest in a decade. Additionally, the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR) reported a record-breaking 136,934 requests for refugee status between January and November 2023. Furthermore, migration authorities detained over 2.4 million people along the Mexico-US border in 2023, marking the highest figure ever recorded, as reported by MBN.
