CONAPESCA Pushes Sustainable Aquaculture in 2025

This week in sustainability news: CONAPESCA announced key achievements in the development of a more sustainable fishing and aquaculture sector during 2025. Meanwhile, the government of Sonora provided details on Phase III of the Puerto Peñasco photovoltaic power plant, projecting to add up to 300MW of installed capacity by July 2027. Mexico Advanced Sustainable Fisheries, Aquaculture: CONAPESCA

Mexico’s National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA) closed 2025 reporting advances across training, monitoring, financing, and social support programs aimed at strengthening fisheries and aquaculture while reinforcing food sovereignty and sustainability goals. Key achievements included the distribution of 1.47 million carp, tilapia, and trout fingerlings to restocking and controlled farming centers, MX$1.3 million (US$72,334) in financing for fishers, and conservation efforts to protect the totoaba and critically endangered vaquita porpoise. 

CFE, Sonora Advance Puerto Peñasco Solar Expansion

The government of Sonora provided details on Phase III of the Puerto Peñasco photovoltaic power plant, Latin America’s largest solar complex under development. According to Governor Alfonso Durazo, the plant is projected to add up to 300MW of installed capacity by July 2027, reaching up to 1,000MW once Phase IV is completed in 2028. The expansion, led by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), represents an investment of US$347 million. According to official estimates, the additional capacity will help reduce between 1 million and 1.4 million metric tons of CO2 emissions per year.

Formula E, DHL Renew Sustainable Logistics Partnership

Ahead of the 2026 Hankook Mexico City E-Prix, scheduled for Jan. 10, DHL and the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship reaffirmed their sustainability-focused logistics partnership for a 12th consecutive season. The 2025-26 season will feature 17 races in 11 cities, making it one of the most active calendars in Formula E history. Organizers say the schedule has been designed to reduce travel distances between venues, lowering emissions associated with transporting cars, batteries, and infrastructure. In addition, the initial shipment of equipment for the season will move from Brazil to Mexico by sea before continuing to Miami by road, a route intended to reduce emissions while improving operational efficiency.

Lago de Texcoco Advances as Major Restoration Project

President Claudia Sheinbaum visited the Lago de Texcoco Ecological Park in the State of Mexico to oversee progress on the environmental project. The president announced that the park’s opening hours will be extended from Tuesday to Sunday, with a permanent offering of recreational activities. The government will also be taking measures to strengthen accessibility and mobility, such as the creation of transportation routes from strategic points in the Valley of Mexico, internal transport to connect the different islands within the park, and improved connectivity with neighboring communities such as San Salvador Atenco and Ecatepec.
