Latin American nations have adopted the Brasilia Declaration 2025, committing to harmonized, reliable information on product sustainability throughout their life cycles, as part of efforts to promote sustainable consumption and production.

The declaration was signed July 7-11 through the Americas Environmental Alliance, the region’s first labeling program. The alliance aims to provide nearly 450 million consumers with verified sustainability data, encourage business innovation and competitiveness, and support government climate, biodiversity and pollution commitments.

During the event, Mariana Mazzucato, Professor, University College London, emphasized that public procurement can serve as a strategic tool to shape markets toward climate goals, prioritizing public value over cost efficiency. She cited Brazil’s National School Feeding Program as an example, connecting smallholder farmers to demand for healthy, sustainably produced food while addressing hunger.

The regional initiative aligns with the development of a global framework for Digital Product Information Systems (DPIS). Representatives from 15 countries contributed regional perspectives. Organizers said the measures strengthen Latin America’s capacity to create enabling environments that recognize and reward companies leading in sustainable consumption and production.
