Mexico City Boosts Noche Buena Production

The Mexico City Ministry of the Environment (SEDEMA), led by Minister Julia Álvarez, held a meeting with producers, the business sector and various city government agencies to strengthen the production and commercialization of poinsettias (Noche buena) one of the most important economic activities in conservation land during the holiday season.

During the event, Álvarez noted that MX$5.4 million were invested to support poinsettia production. She also highlighted that poinsettia cultivation is not only a deeply rooted tradition in Mexican culture but also an economic pillar for the city’s rural communities, particularly in the chinampa zone.

This year, 216 producers from the conservation land planted, tended, and harvested 1.8 million poinsettias, the highest figure in five years. The main production areas included San Luis Tlaxialtemalco, Barrios de Xochimilco, San Gregorio Atlapulco, Santiago Tepalcatlalpan, San Juan Ixtayopan, and Santiago Tulyehualco.

Álvarez stressed that this effort directly contributes to the conservation of the territory, as strengthening the local economy helps sustain the environmental services that benefit the entire metropolis, such as aquifer recharge, climate regulation, and biodiversity protection.

“Consuming locally strengthens our economy and allows us to clearly trace what we consume; that is, it lets us know the origin and destination of our products. That is why we remind you that poinsettias from conservation land have a distinctive identification: an orange sticker featuring a white poinsettia illustration and the phrase Hecho en Xochimilco,” the minister stated.

The event also included participation from Alejandra Frausto, Mexico City’s Minister of Tourism, who highlighted the cultural and tourism value of poinsettias as symbols of identity and tradition; and Manola Sabalza, Minister of Economic Development, who reaffirmed her agency’s commitment to promoting fair marketing channels and strengthening the floriculture production chain.

Additionally, representatives from the business sector reiterated their interest in building strategic partnerships to expand the distribution of poinsettias grown in the capital, promoting local and responsible consumption.
