SEP launches Mexico’s first Semiconductor Design Laboratory at the National Technological Institute of Mexico (TecNM) in Aguascalientes. The facility aims to strengthen the country's position in semiconductor design and technology education, contributing to national growth and technological self-sufficiency.

“We believe the future of nations depends on two main variables: energy and knowledge,” Mario Delgado Carrillo, Ministry of Education, said. “Mexico’s potential lies in innovation and technology, and this laboratory represents a decisive step toward that future,” added Delgado.  This launch underscores the country's commitment to increasing investment in science and technology, considering Mexico’s ranking as the eighth largest producer of engineers globally, according to UNESCO. With 114,000 engineers graduating annually, Mexico is positioned to leverage its human capital, making the economy more attractive to Mexican businesses and foreign companies.

Delgado explained that semiconductor development involves three main processes: design, manufacturing, and packaging. While Mexico had a strong presence in the packaging stage, the real value lies in the design phase. He noted that the most significant profits in the semiconductor industry come from design and conceptualization, areas dominated by Asian countries. As such, this new laboratory aims to position Mexico as a key player in this critical sector.

Highlighting the political context, Delgado acknowledged the strategic and assertive actions of President Claudia Sheinbaum in her relationship with the United States, prioritizing national sovereignty despite challenges like trade tariffs. He emphasized that strengthening the internal economy is essential, regardless of external economic relationships.

During the event, TecNM and Synopsys Chile LTDA formalized a collaboration agreement aimed at advancing semiconductor education through training and certification programs for both students and faculty. The agreement, signed by Ramón López Jiménez, Director, TecNM and Victor Grimblatt, Executive Director of R&D Engineering, Synopsys Chile, will promote knowledge exchange in areas such as software engineering, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and semiconductor design. As part of the partnership, TecNM will gain access to Synopsys' software tools and educational resources, enhancing the institute’s research and teaching capabilities.
