SNE and STPS set labor guidelines to strengthen policies and rights for jobseekers. These included banning outsourcing, creating job opportunities with the business sector, and reducing working hours. Job placement is one of the key agendas promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum, along with gender equality in the workforce.
“For President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the work of the SNE, which focuses on job placement, meaning helping people find employment, is one of the key agendas she asked to be promoted through the STPS,” stated Quia Chávez, Deputy Minister, STPS. The session addressed the prohibition of outsourcing, labor inspections to ensure compliance with general working conditions, the provision of quality job vacancies in coordination with the business sector, collaboration with the Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro (Youth Building the Future) program, the reduction of working hours, and advancing policies to ensure fair wages for Mexican workers.
In September, the Chamber of Deputies approved a legislative measure to provide economic support for young people facing unemployment. The initiative passed with 473 votes in favor. The approved bill added a second paragraph to Art. 123 of the Constitution, requiring the state to offer monthly financial assistance to individuals aged 18 to 29 who were neither employed nor enrolled in educational programs, reported MBN.
Regarding wages, STPS reported that the policy of increasing the minimum wage will continue during this administration, with the goal of tripling it. Previous increases have not led to inflation or unemployment, and have allowed for rapid reductions in poverty levels never before seen in the country's history, stated Marath Bolaños, Minister of Labor and Social Welfare, STP.
“As the first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum is placing significant emphasis on the gender agenda and equality between men and women,” stated Chávez. While women’s employment has shown growth, with a 2.6% increase compared to 2019, disparities remain, as women’s employment and labor participation rates are still 22 percentage points lower than those of men, reports MBN.
SNE highlighted the importance of ensuring fair labor conditions for beneficiaries of the Mexico-Canada Temporary Agricultural Workers Program (PTAT), individuals in mobility contexts, and repatriated nationals.
“We implemented specific actions, incorporating a gender perspective and substantive equality in all job placement and labor mobility services,” stated Claudio Frausto Lara, newly appointed Head, SNU. Frausto communicated plans to work with SNE office teams across the 32 federal entities to address the challenges and tasks assigned by Deputy Minister Chávez.
