In the early hours of Wednesday, the primary server of the Yucatán State Government detected a cyberattack on its central system, prompting immediate action to safeguard critical data. As a precautionary measure, the state executive's systems and web pages were promptly taken offline to mitigate potential risks and prevent further compromise. This incident marks the second compromise this year since March, prompting questions about how to further fortify its security posture.

According to Yucatán’s State Government, the central system of Yucatan remains unharmed. However, out of extreme precaution and to protect citizens' confidential information, all departmental portals have been temporarily disabled. This decision impacts various administrative processes, which will be suspended until operations resume. Efforts to expedite the restoration of the service network have been initiated, but the timeline for the resumption of normal operations for these services is currently unclear. Nevertheless, once the system is restored, those affected by this disruption will have their administrative processes, appointments and procedures rescheduled, according to the State Government

The Yucatan State Government, despite committing to prioritize resilient cybersecurity measures following a system compromise in March 2023, faces the distressing reality of a second incident, signaling the persistence of substantial digital vulnerabilities. A potential culprit is the use of outdated network systems, rendering them susceptible to cyberattacks and potentially exposing both governments and citizens’ confidential information to unauthorized actors, according to an AWS release. This trend is reflective of a global issue where aging infrastructure becomes a potential weak link in the face of evolving cyber threats.

To mitigate the associated risks of cyberattacks, like the one targeting the Yucatán government, numerous industry leaders have advised federal authorities to accelerate the application of a coherent Cybersecurity Law. Another possible solution includes mimicking Michoacán’s initiative to reform outdated bureaucratic digital systems. Known as Nube Michoacán, this cloud service launched in collaboration with Amazon Web Services, focuses on rectifying operational deficiencies found within governmental portals and platforms, effectively updating them to current cybersecurity standards.

Initiatives, such as the one deployed in Michoacán, are effectively serving citizens by safeguarding sensitive governmental information and simplifying bureaucratic processes through digitalization. This has the potential to translate into savings of millions of dollars in public funds.
