Puebla to Become Leader in Smart Urban Development
Puebla Mayor José Chedraui reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to positioning the city as a model of intelligent, technological, and inclusive urban development during his participation at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona. Joined by Jaime Oropeza Casas, Puebla Minister of Economy and Tourism, Chedraui highlighted that the city is advancing toward its consolidation as a smart city, leveraging technology and innovation to improve residents’ quality of life.
During meetings with global leaders and experts, the mayor shared details of the city’s ongoing initiatives, including the Puebla Brilla program, modernization of traffic light systems, and digital security measures designed to make public services more efficient.
“The future of cities depends on how technology is integrated into people’s well-being,” Chedraui said. “In Puebla, we are convinced that urban development must be orderly, inclusive, and sustainable.”
The Smart City Expo World Congress, organized by Fira Barcelona, is the world’s leading forum on urban innovation, smart cities, and technological solutions for sustainable development. This year’s edition, held from Nov. 4 to 6, brings together more than 1,100 exhibitors and 25,000 attendees under the theme “The Time for Cities.” Participants from governments, companies, and civil society are discussing strategies to create more sustainable, efficient, and livable urban environments, with artificial intelligence (AI) as a key driver of transformation.
Puebla’s participation underscores its commitment to a modern urban agenda that promotes technological innovation and global collaboration as pillars for sustainable growth and enhanced competitiveness in the Mexican capital.
Puebla Seeks to Be Cultural, Tourist Host City for World Cup
MBN reported that in order to boost international tourism and the local economy, the Puebla City Council has approved a proposal by Councilor Manuel Durán for the city to serve as a cultural and tourist host during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Led by Chedraui, the City Council endorsed the initiative during a regular session, supporting Durán’s vision to align Puebla with the global exposure generated by the World Cup, which will be held across Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
Although Puebla is not slated to host official matches, Durán emphasized that the city has the necessary infrastructure, connectivity, and hospitality to welcome sports delegations, media, and fans from around the world. “We want Puebla to once again be part of world football history and to show the planet its culture, hospitality, and greatness,” Durán said.
The approved measure does not involve public spending but promotes coordination between the Municipal Ministry of Economy and Tourism and the Municipal Sports Institute, in collaboration with the state government and the federal administration. Together, they aim to position Puebla as a hub for events and services linked to the 2026 World Cup.
