OXXO Launches Waste Management Program in Nuevo Leon
OXXO and Red Ambiental have launched a new environmental management initiative in Nuevo Leon aimed at improving waste collection and recycling practices across retail operations. The program covers OXXO stores in the municipalities of Apodaca, Guadalupe and Juarez, where Red Ambiental will manage third-party waste collection. The companies estimate more than 300t of waste will be collected monthly and processed for reuse or appropriate disposal.
Under the initiative, stores will implement differentiated waste collection for cardboard, glass, aluminum and plastic. Organic waste such as fruit and food scraps will be converted into vermicompost for use in public spaces and green areas at store locations. Inorganic waste may also be reintegrated into internal operational processes.
“This joint effort reinforces our identity as a responsible company and encourages everyone in our value chain to contribute to sustainability,” said Jorge Sánchez, Regional Operations Manager, OXXO, for the East Nuevo Leon region.
Daniel Rodríguez, Director of Industrial and Commercial Services, Red Ambiental, added that participating stores will receive compost material for maintaining green areas, as well as a monthly certificate issued by the company’s Integrated Waste Utilization Center (CIPRES). The certificate will outline the volume of waste collected and the recovery rates by store location.
The two companies also plan to work together on social and environmental programs in schools, neighborhoods and parks in the region, supporting OXXO’s commitment to community engagement and sustainable development.
