Bayer has inaugurated an on-site solar power system at its Yax-Nah vegetable seed production facility in Chiapas, making it the company’s first site in Latin America to operate with renewable energy generated on-site. The installation, developed by Iberdrola México, has a capacity of 300KW and includes 660 PV modules, generating 552MWh annually and reducing 233mt of CO₂ emissions per year.

The transition aligns with Bayer’s broader sustainability strategy, which aims to achieve climate neutrality in its operations by 2030. The company is focused on reducing its carbon footprint across its production chain and supporting farmers in implementing climate-smart agricultural practices.

Located in a temperate climate, Yax-Nah specializes in producing hybrid seeds for chili peppers and cucumbers, primarily in greenhouses. The facility spans 151ha and has 50 greenhouses, allowing for year-round production through four planting cycles. This structure provides a competitive advantage by ensuring stable seed production and mitigating losses caused by adverse weather in other regions.

Yax-Nah produces approximately 7,500kg of seeds annually, distributing around 500 genetic seed lines to farmers worldwide. The facility employs more than 600 people from nearby communities in the municipalities of Comitan de Dominguez and La Trinitaria. It also supports local farmers through a collaborative initiative that has integrated five regional producers into its supply chain, contributing to a more inclusive and sustainable agricultural model. The site generates an annual economic impact of US$15 million and benefits around 1,000 families in the region.

During the inauguration event, representatives from Bayer and Iberdrola México highlighted the role of the new solar installation in advancing sustainability efforts. José Luis Roblero, Site Leader, Bayer in Chiapas, emphasized the company’s commitment to integrating sustainability into daily operations. “Our approach is based on science, innovation, and collaboration with communities and strategic partners. This solar system is a tangible example of how we align our actions with a more sustainable future,” he said.

René Ramírez, Iberdrola México’s Commercial Lead for the Central Region, highlighted the impact of renewable energy solutions like Smart Solar for businesses. “Bayer and Iberdrola México share a commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. This on-site solar system in Chiapas reinforces our dedication to generating value while promoting a cleaner planet for future generations,” he said.

Bayer’s sustainability strategy includes broader goals across its agricultural, pharmaceutical, and consumer health divisions, such as supporting 100 million small-scale farmers in developing countries, expanding healthcare access, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
