Energy supply in industrial buildings has posed a significant challenge for developers aiming to capitalize on the nearshoring trend. As a result, microgrids with innovative and sustainable systems have emerged as a viable solution to ensure reliable service for companies.

In response to this need, Enlight, a company specializing in microgrids, has established a US$50 million fund, called the "Net Zero Fund," to finance the installation of solar panels in industrial properties nationwide.

Ena Gutiérrez, Director of New Business, Enlight, explained in an interview with Econohábitat that microgrids are photovoltaic systems with battery storage. These systems provide clean, reliable, and cost-effective energy, allowing companies to save up to 30% on electricity costs.

"Mexico faces infrastructure challenges that often result in poor service quality and operational interruptions for factories. Additionally, there are locations where electricity availability is limited, restricting industrial growth. Industrial park owners struggle with relying on an electric system that cannot guarantee service for their tenants," the specialist noted.

Currently, Enlight has over 200MW of installed solar capacity and around 60MWh of battery storage capacity. "We see many opportunities in industrial parks because there are still many without an alternative solution to the CFE grid. The increasing establishment of both national and foreign companies will drive demand for these solutions, as companies have clear production goals and environmental targets," Gutiérrez added. The regions likely to receive funding for solar panel installations include Monterrey, Tijuana, Queretaro and Guadalajara, states the company.
