Women Leaders Push for Gender Equality in Electricity Sector

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Mexico Section gathered women leaders in the electricity sector to discuss advances in gender equality and sustainable development. At IEE’s 38th International Summer Meeting on Power and Industrial Applications (RVP AI) and the International Autumn Meeting on Communications, Computing, Electronics, Automation, Robotics and Industrial Exhibition (ROC&C), women experts from both the private sector and government shared their insights, shared CFE in a press release. 

Paola Gálvez, Executive Director of the Women in the Electricity Sector Commission, CANAME, highlighted the importance of inspiring younger generations. Meanwhile, Nimbe Durán, head of the Gender and Inclusion Unit (UGI), CFE, emphasized transforming gender relations within institutions through electrification projects. Likewise, Diana Marenco Sandoval from CFE presented a communication strategy focused on visibility, recognition, dissemination, and creating narratives about gender equality.  The event also featured female pioneers in traditionally male-dominated roles, such as Rosa Galaz and Brenda Rosas, who discussed changes in female inclusion in the sector. 

On the third day of the 38th RVP-AI/ROC&C, discussions focused on contributions to the national electricity sector, emission reduction, and the environment.

Salvador Portillo, President, CANAME, highlighted the importance of technology for the future of the electrical system. José Luis Aburto from the Mexican Academy of Engineering emphasized the need to generate electricity from clean sources. Raúl Talán, Director, FIDE, pointed out that transportation, not electricity generation, is the largest pollution emitter in Mexico, and explained criteria for new power plants. Gerardo Hiriart, Technical Director, CIGRE Mexico, analyzed technical options for achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Lastly, Juan Antonio Contreras, Head, Office of Distribution Systems Studies, highlighted the benefits of distributed generation for the electrical system by working together with other electricity sector participants.
