Major retailers and logistics operators keep investing in Mexico. Walmart Mexico and Central America, for example, began building a US$278.7 million distribution center in Huamantla, Tlaxcala. Meanwhile DHL Supply Chain inaugurated its logistics center Gaia II, which represented a US$545.4 million investment, in Cienega de Flores, Nuevo Leon.

Walmart Announces New Center in Tlaxcala

Walmart Mexico and Central America began the construction of its 33rd distribution center (CEDIS) in Mexico, located in Huamantla, Tlaxcala. This center represents an investment of US$278.7 million, and will allow the company to cater to the needs of over 680 stores in Tlaxcala, Puebla, Veracruz, Hidalgo, Oaxaca, and Mexico City. The company adds that this will be one its more advanced centers in terms of technology in the country.

The CEDIS aims to offer the best omnichannel solutions for its clients and partners, says Javier Treviño, Vice President Senior Corporate Affairs, Walmart Mexico and Central America.

Salvador Santos, Municipal President of Huamantla, highlighted that Huamantla is in a key location thanks to its connections to other states, which grants it key logistic capabilities. Walmart has one of the broadest supply chains in the country, with nearly 1 million m2 of facilities and over 18,000 associates moving over 1.4 billion boxes annually, says the company.

DHL Supply Chain inaugurated a new logistics center, Gaia II, in Nuevo Leon. The center covers 50,000 m2 and includes 18 docks, four ramps, and more than 50 positions for quick loading and unloading.

The center will have state-of-the-art facilities, fast-charging electric forklifts, security systems with biometric controls, and access control systems for transportation providers, says Mario Rodríguez, President, DHL Supply Chain Mexico. The center’s equipment follows the company's sustainability strategy, using solar panels and hybrid and electric vehicles, adds Rodríguez.

Enhanced logistics contributes to Nuevo Leon’s competitiveness and leadership as an ideal place to invest, says Iván Rivas, Minister of Economy of Nuevo Leon. The state says in a press release that out of the 203 investment projects confirmed between October 2021 and October 2023, 14 belong to the logistics sector.
