Mexico’s natural gas imports from the United States surged 4.6% in 1H25, rising from 1.14Tcf in 1H24 to 1.20Tcf in 1H25. This marks the highest six-month total ever recorded for imports from the United States, averaging around 6.65Bcf/d via pipeline. Every month this year has set a new record for its respective period, with June alone up 7% year-on-year, from 203.7Bcf in 1H24 to 218.1Bcf in 1H25.

At an average price of US$2.77/Mcf, Mexico spent roughly US$604.1 million on US gas imports in June. For 1H25, at an average of US$3.08/Mcf, total spending reached approximately US$3.7 billion.

Peak import levels typically occur in August. Last year, monthly imports peaked at 221Bcf, but that record was already surpassed in May 2025, when imports reached 225.3Bcf.

Mexico remains the top US gas importer, receiving more than twice the daily volume of Canada, the second-largest buyer at 2.86Bcf/d. France and the Netherlands followed at 1.76Bcf/d and 1.74Bcf/d, respectively, via LNG exports.

Natural gas has fueled more than half of Mexico’s electricity supply since 2009. By 2024, gas accounted for 58% of total power generation, up from less than 20% in 2000. Today, over half of the country’s electricity relies on US imports, as domestic production continues to lag. In 2024, US gas met nearly 75% of national demand, roughly 8.7Bcf/d, according to Mexico’s Ministry of Energy.
