To strengthen economic and political ties, Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam will make a State visit to Mexico from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3, 2025. This will mark the first official visit hosted by President Claudia Sheinbaum and will coincide with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. During the visit, Singapore is expected to announce the opening of its first embassy in Mexico, the country’s first diplomatic mission in a Spanish-speaking nation.
According to Agustín García-López Loaeza, Mexico’s Ambassador to Singapore, both governments have confirmed the visit, which will center on investment opportunities aligned with Plan México and efforts to diversify trade. “The foreign minister made it clear: the visit must prioritize business, trade, investment, and diversification. Our goal is to secure investments that support Plan México and strengthen commercial ties,” said García-López.
The ambassador noted that as Mexico undergoes the so-called “Fourth Transformation” (4T), Singapore is experiencing its own political transition known as the “Fourth Generation” (4G), a reference to the leadership of Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, the first head of government born after Singapore’s founding in 1965. “Both President Sheinbaum and Prime Minister Wong represent a new generation of leadership. Singapore views this as an opportunity to deepen forward-looking cooperation,” he added.
Beyond economic alignment, both countries share a social agenda focused on youth, education, and workforce development. As part of this evolving relationship, a bilateral working group will be established in 2026 to bring together business leaders and promote student exchange programs aimed at strengthening key sectors from the foundation up.
The Mexican government is preparing a delegation of public officials and private-sector representatives for the visit, with a focus on strategic industries such as advanced manufacturing, medical devices, electronic and electrical components, tourism, fintech, logistics, and infrastructure.
Ambassador García-López also shared that both President Tharman and Prime Minister Wong have expressed admiration for President Sheinbaum’s leadership, particularly her diplomatic approach in managing US tariff threats during the administration of Donald Trump.
