The UK Ambassador urged Mexico to ratify the UK’s CPTPP accession, opening a new chapter for trade, investment, and strategic cooperation. In addition, President Claudia Sheinbaum and Emmanuel Macron signed new Mexico–France cooperation agreements.

Mexico-UK Partnership Poised for Growth With CPTPP Ratification

UK Ambassador Susannah Goshko urged Mexico to complete the ratification of Britain’s Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) accession, stressing that it “would open a new chapter” for bilateral cooperation. She pointed to shared priorities between Plan México and the United Kingdom’s Modern Industrial Strategy as a foundation for expanded economic ties. 

Mexico, France Strengthen Ties With New Agreements

President Claudia Sheinbaum and her French counterpart Emmanuel Macron formalized a set of bilateral cooperation agreements. Sheinbaum explained that the accords cover joint initiatives on environmental protection, gender equality, and academic exchange programs enabling students from both countries to study abroad.

Mexico Increases Taxes on Sugar Imports

The Mexican government issued a decree to modify import tariffs for sugar, a move aimed at protecting the national sugarcane agro-industry from the effects of domestic oversupply and falling international prices. The new decree changes the tariffs for specific sugar tariff classifications. The previous specific tariffs, which ranged from US$0.338/kg to US$0.39586/kg, will be replaced by ad-valorem tariffs of 156% and 210.44%, depending on the specific tariff fraction.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio rejected claims that the Trump administration plans to send military forces to Mexico or take unilateral steps in the fight against drug trafficking. He stressed that cooperation between the two nations in combating organized crime is “historic.”

Switzerland, United States Reach Deal to Cut Tariffs

Switzerland and the United States have reached an agreement to reduce Donald Trump’s 39% tariffs on Swiss imports down to 15%, as part of a broader deal that includes a commitment from Switzerland to invest US$200 billion in the United States. Swiss Economics Minister Guy Parmelin described the agreement as a “great relief” for the Swiss economy, which had suffered setbacks since the tariffs were implemented last August. He credited a recent White House meeting between Swiss business leaders and Trump as key in advancing the deal.
