FEMSA Releases 2024 Sustainability Report
FEMSA Proximity and Health has released its 2024 Sustainability Report, outlining progress in its strategy to create economic, social and environmental value through proximity-based business operations. The document marks the first sustainability report published under the division’s new integrated identity, which brings together five business units: OXXO Mexico, Americas and Mobility, Multiformats, Health and Proximity Europe.
The report details advancements across three strategic pillars: employees, communities, and the environment. The division operates more than 34,000 points of sale in 13 countries and employs over 110,000 people.
In 2024, the company invested more than US$5 million in employee wellness initiatives and US$12.4 million in community development projects. Through 828 initiatives, it reports having positively impacted more than 1 million people.
On the environmental front, FEMSA reported that 50% of its operations use renewable energy. It also diverted 30% of its operational waste from landfills. The company’s sustainability actions are aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
Internally, the company implemented a new Cultural Framework developed with employee participation. This initiative aimed to strengthen organizational values and behaviors and adjust practices for each business unit. FEMSA reported that 44% of new hires in 2024 were women. It also introduced mentorship programs, support networks, and flexible work arrangements to meet diverse employee needs, including those of students and people living near their workplaces.
Through its community programs, FEMSA supported small and medium-sized enterprises and sustainable suppliers. It promoted local brands to improve capacity building and business standards while advancing regional development. Social actions included public space rehabilitation, donations of food and medicine, and volunteer initiatives involving employees and their families.
By 2030, FEMSA Proximity and Health aims to ensure that at least 5% of its workforce includes people from vulnerable groups, including individuals with disabilities, older adults and refugees. It also targets having women in 40% of executive roles, using 85% renewable energy across operations, achieving zero waste to landfill, and reaching more than 8 million people through community wellness initiatives.
