Mexico may formally request the US to take environmental responsibility for contamination caused by SpaceX explosions near the border, following the latest Starship 36 blast in Texas that scattered debris into Mexican territory. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a government-led evaluation after authorities found hazardous materials posing risks to ecosystems and communities in Matamoros. Despite SpaceX downplaying the incident, concerns grow among residents and officials over repeated environmental damage and potential safety threats.
Senate Proposes New Circular Economy Law Focused on Biogas
Mexico’s Senate has proposed a new law to advance the circular economy by promoting organic waste separation for biogas and renewable energy production, aiming to replace the current waste management legislation. The initiative seeks to enhance coordination across government levels, foster innovation, create green jobs, and reduce methane emissions by utilizing organic waste that currently ends up in landfills. Inspired by successful international models, this reform aligns with Mexico’s climate goals, including a 35% greenhouse gas reduction by 2030, and complements projects like the Circular Economy Park in Hidalgo.
Nissan Mexicana Achieves Carbon Neutrality in 2024
Nissan Mexicana announced that its corporate headquarters in Mexico City achieved carbon neutrality during the 2024 fiscal year by offsetting 513t of CO₂ equivalent through carbon credit purchases. This milestone is part of the company’s broader sustainability strategy, emphasizing reduced emissions and environmental responsibility across its operations.
Walmart de México Expands Post-Consumer Recycling Program
Walmart de México & Centroamérica is scaling up its Reciclamania Evoluciona recycling program, now operating 38 centers across 10 states with support from over 56 partners, having collected more than 855t of recyclables since 2019. The initiative significantly reduces CO₂ emissions and landfill waste by processing materials like PET, glass, and cardboard into new products, while fostering collaboration with major corporations and environmental groups. Positioned as a core part of Walmart’s sustainability strategy, the program aims to expand to 40 centers in 12 states by 2025 to boost recycling infrastructure and promote a circular economy in Mexico.
Mexico Outlines Environmental Priorities at UNAM Forum
Alicia Bárcena, Minister, SEMARNAT, outlined Mexico’s Humanist Ecological and Environmental Policy, aiming to restore degraded sites, reforest vast areas, cut greenhouse gas emissions by 35%, and clean polluted rivers.
