Nissan Plant Closure Raises Concerns for 2,400 Workers
Nissan Mexicana has announced it will shut down its vehicle production operations at the Civac plant in Morelos by March 2026, transferring all manufacturing to its Aguascalientes facility. The move marks the end of nearly 60 years of operations in Morelos and has sparked concern among the plant’s approximately 2,400 workers.
The announcement was delivered earlier this week via the Independent Union of Nissan Mexicana Workers. During an emergency assembly held in Jiutepec, union leaders urged employees to remain calm amid growing uncertainty. “Everyone is unsettled. We need clear information to understand what comes next,” they said.
The union revealed it will begin an internal review and develop a commission to manage the transition and severance process. According to union leaders, temporary workers will be dismissed between December 2025 and January 2026, while permanent employees will be gradually laid off through March 2026, coinciding with the end of Nissan’s fiscal year.
Roughly 1,300 unionized employees with collective bargaining agreements are expected to receive severance packages worth 150% of the standard compensation, as part of negotiations with the company.
The closure has drawn concern from state authorities. “We are deeply worried about the 2,400 families impacted by this decision,” said Morelos Governor Margarita González. She noted plans to meet with Nissan executives to explore the possibility of relocating some employees to Aguascalientes.
González also committed to supporting those who remain in the region. “We will work to place affected workers in other auto companies within the state and offer support through the National Employment Service,” she said, adding that entrepreneurship initiatives will also be made available.
Meanwhile, Aguascalientes Governor Tere Jiménez confirmed the production transfer aligns with talks she held in Japan with Nissan’s leadership. “This decision strengthens Aguascalientes as a strategic hub for Nissan in Mexico and reinforces our position in the national automotive sector,” she said.
