Lafayette Advances Sustainability in the Textile Industry
Lafayette, with over 80 years in the textile industry and 30 years in Mexico, is reinforcing its commitment to sustainability through innovative environmental initiatives. The company has made significant investments in water conservation, energy efficiency, and material reuse to minimize its ecological footprint while maintaining its market position.
The company has implemented advanced wastewater treatment and recirculation systems, allowing it to treat 100% of the water used in its production processes and recycle approximately 70%. In 2024, the company increased water recovery by 5.27% by expanding its treatment capacity and optimizing water recycling quality. “Through innovative technologies and sustainable practices, we aim to reduce our impact and inspire the entire value chain to adopt responsible production models," said Naydú Serrato, Corporate Communications and Sustainability Director, Lafayette.
To reduce its carbon footprint, Lafayette has invested US$1.6 million in energy efficiency improvements, including the installation of over 10,000 m2 of solar roofing and the adoption of steam generation equipment that enables cleaner combustion. These initiatives have helped the company lower CO2 emissions to 4.5% and nitrogen oxide levels to 44% below environmental standards.
Lafayette is actively integrating circular economy principles into its production. The company manufactures its own recycled polyester yarn using PET bottles, certified by the Global Recycled Standard. Additionally, its Green Bio textile line biodegrades 91% in landfills within three years, offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional synthetic fabrics. The company has also developed low-water-consumption dyeing and finishing processes, optimizing resource use without compromising textile quality.
Beyond its direct operations, Lafayette promotes environmental stewardship through reforestation initiatives. The company has donated over 80,000 trees across four countries where it operates, supporting local ecosystems and fostering a culture of sustainability. Additionally, its Hilando Empresas program provides training for small business owners, helping them adopt more sustainable and efficient business practices.
