NFE Authorized to Export LNG to Non-FTA Countries
New Fortress Energy has received authorization from the US Department of Energy to export up to 1.4Mt/y of LNG to non-free trade agreement (non-FTA) countries from its Fast LNG 1 project. This approval is valid for a term of five years.
The announcement was made on Sept. 3, confirming that New Fortress Energy can now export LNG from its offshore plant in Altamira, Mexico, to countries that do not have free trade agreements with the United States.
The Fast LNG 1 project commenced its first output in July, marking a significant milestone for New Fortress Energy. The same month, a federal judge issued a decision preventing the Democrat administration from pausing the approval of pending and future applications to export LNG from new projects to non-FTA countries.
New Fortress Energy is optimistic about the incremental growth in LNG demand within Latin America, specifically mentioning countries such as Brazil and Jamaica as potential markets during its second-quarter earnings call.
The company’s authorization to export LNG from the Altamira facility represents a crucial step in its strategy to expand its footprint in the global LNG market and meet the increasing energy demands of non-FTA countries.
