Real-Time AI Driving Smarter, Safer Logistics
STORY INLINE POST
Q: What industry gaps or inefficiencies was the company created to solve, and how have those evolved over three decades of digital transformation in transportation and logistics?
A: LIS Software Solutions was founded in 1995 to address inefficiencies in how transportation companies managed and integrated their operations. We initially worked with companies that had their own private fleets, such as Bachoco, Coca-Cola’s distributors, Pepsi, Gamesa, and Estafeta, developing software that transitioned from DOS to Windows client-server environments.
A core focus from the beginning was enabling real-time data access, though this was challenging due to industry norms at the time. Most transport companies only documented trips after completion, creating delays and inefficiencies. Although we piloted real-time systems with some forward-thinking clients, broad adoption only happened after the Carta Porte regulation mandated real-time documentation before trips. This regulation was a turning point, pushing the industry toward real-time data usage, which greatly aligned with our long-term vision.
Another major issue we aimed to solve was the fragmentation of information. Most companies operated with separate systems for operations, accounting, maintenance, and more, creating “islands of information” that made data consolidation difficult and error-prone. Our solution was to integrate all data into a single platform, ensuring operational, financial, and fiscal information aligned accurately across departments.
Q: What specific value proposition does LIS Software Solutions bring to the transportation and logistics market that clearly differentiates it from other providers?
A: LIS differentiates itself through advanced AI-driven decision making, real-time cross-border visibility, and intelligent data analytics, all within a single, integrated software platform. We have embedded AI into our ZAM Plus system to optimize trip assignments based on severn or eight key variables, including driver hours, location, unit type, and trip distribution fairness. This ensures balanced workloads and helps companies reduce operational disparities among drivers.
Another key differentiator is our full cross-border functionality. Our platform enables end-to-end tracking of shipments between Mexico and the United States, even when handled by different carriers and equipment. This solves a common industry blind spot: loss of visibility when loads change hands at the border.
Additionally, we are enhancing our data analytics module with AI to allow managers to ask natural-language questions about their operations, such as identifying top-performing routes, and receive actionable insights and improvement suggestions.
Q: How does LIS Software Solutions ensure the highest standards of cybersecurity and data privacy for your clients’ sensitive operational and financial information?
A: We take cybersecurity seriously, especially given the sensitive operational and financial data our platform handles. We operate on both Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure, leveraging their top-tier security standards and infrastructure. We also work with dedicated cybersecurity advisors to continually strengthen our defenses and ensure proper data backups and risk mitigation strategies are in place.
As we transition from traditional software licensing to a cloud-based rental model, we have seen firsthand how vulnerable on-premise systems can be. Over the past few years, we have observed that at least one client per month has suffered a cyberattack, particularly those still running our platform on local servers. These attacks often result in lost data, especially when companies refuse to pay ransoms, and can have serious compliance implications, especially with new regulations like the Carta Porte requirement from Mexico’s tax authority.
Our goal is to offer not just a powerful logistics platform, but a secure and reliable one that protects our clients’ critical information.
Q: Which segments within the transportation and logistics industry benefit most from LIS Software Solutions’ ecosystem?
A: We serve the full spectrum of the freight transport industry in Mexico with tailored solutions that meet the needs of both small and large operators. SMEs, which typically operate between six and 40 units, represent a significant portion of the market, with about 20,000 companies. We offer them an affordable, easy-to-use platform that supports over 400 active clients.
For medium and large fleets, those operating over 30 units, we provide a more robust and scalable system called ZAM. These companies, of which there are about 1,250 in Mexico, benefit from our advanced features that accommodate more complex operational demands.
What sets us apart is our continued commitment to technological innovation. Over the years, we have evolved from DOS-based systems to Windows client-server environments, then to .NET. We now operate fully in the cloud with integrated AI and big data tools. One of our latest developments is our predictive maintenance solution, which uses data from GPS telematics providers in conjunction with our maintenance module. This allows companies to monitor individual vehicles and predict when specific components will need servicing, reducing unplanned downtime and improving fleet reliability. Combined with our cross-border visibility and AI-powered operations, our ecosystem delivers measurable value to logistics companies seeking operational efficiency, end-to-end control, and future-ready tools.
Q: How does LIS Software Solutions help clients mitigate risk through features such as real-time tracking, route optimization, and incident reporting?
A: Cargo theft is a serious and growing threat in Latin America. We are helping clients address this challenge through real-time monitoring, multi-GPS integration, and intelligent alert systems. Many of our clients use multiple GPS and telematics providers across their fleets, which often creates fragmentation. Our platform consolidates all GPS data into a single dashboard, giving dispatchers and monitorists unified visibility and control.
One key feature is our intelligent alarm system. When a driver triggers an alert, whether due to suspicious activity, forced stops, or tampering, our system immediately activates an audible alarm in the control center to ensure that the monitorist reacts without delay. Speed of response is critical; even a five minute delay can make the difference between preventing a theft and losing a shipment. Our system is designed to ensure response times are immediate, helping staff follow the company’s incident protocols in real time.
Beyond real-time monitoring, our platform also supports route analysis and risk mapping. By analyzing historical data, we help clients identify high-risk zones and adjust routes accordingly. This has become especially valuable as cross-border carriers face increased reluctance from US companies to operate in Mexico due to theft, fuel adulteration (huachicol), and a lack of qualified drivers.
Q: How is the regulatory environment in the United States affecting cross-border movement?
A: There is a growing divide between the transportation landscapes in the United States and Mexico, particularly around regulation and technology. In the United States, enforcement is tightening. Drivers with valid visas are being turned back by immigration authorities if they do not speak fluent English, with threats of visa revocation even when documents are valid. This has made it increasingly difficult for Mexican drivers to operate across the border.
At the same time, the United States is rapidly advancing in autonomous trucking. Tests are already underway where trucks operate without active driver intervention for most of the route, requiring human input only in yards or urban areas. While the United States may see commercial autonomous trucks on highways in as little as five years, Mexico is far behind. Our infrastructure, both in highways and urban freight zones, is not yet equipped to support such technology. A realistic adoption timeline for Mexico could be 15 to 20 years.
In Mexico, about 80% of freight moves by road, with little done by rail, air, or sea. This reliance on road transport is not going away anytime soon, since people still need food and goods regularly. However, the shift toward EVs faces significant challenges in the country, as its electric infrastructure is not yet ready to support a large-scale transition to electric trucks. For example, regions like Yucatan and the Riviera Maya suffer from power outages due to insufficient energy supply and aging plants. Because of this, widespread adoption of electric fleets is still far off.
Q: How do you envision the future of transportation management software evolving, and what role will you play in shaping that trajectory?
A: Transportation management software will evolve to empower the new generation of leaders, often the third generation in family-owned logistics companies, who need data-driven tools to run increasingly complex operations. Unlike 25–30 years ago, when many carriers operated with just notebooks, leaders today cannot manage fleets of 100 trucks without comprehensive software.
Transportation has transformed into a highly financialized business with tightening margins. Knowing profitability by route, client, vehicle, and driver is critical. LIS Software Solutions provides intuitive, AI-powered software that delivers analyzed, actionable insights to help these new leaders make smarter decisions and continue growing their businesses. The future is about making complex data simple and usable to drive sustainable success.
Q: What are LIS Software Solutions’ key strategic priorities and growth expectations for the rest of the year?
A: Despite a complex market environment influenced by tariffs and US trade policies, LIS Software Solutions is committed to advancing innovation, particularly in AI. We see significant potential for growth in cross-border import and export operations, especially along the Mexico-US border, where many Mexican companies operate on both sides. Our new integrated software version is designed to serve these binational logistics needs effectively.
At the same time, we continue enhancing our domestic market offerings by embedding AI-driven data analytics, helping clients optimize operations and make smarter decisions. Our focus remains on leveraging technology to capture emerging opportunities and support growth in both international and local transportation sectors.
