Mexico, European Union Strengthen Climate Cooperation
Mexico and the European Union reaffirmed their commitment to tackling climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, highlighting the development of carbon markets as key for sustainable growth and climate mitigation. During the 11th High-Level Dialogue, both sides agreed to collaborate ahead of COP30 on ambitious climate goals, focusing on carbon pricing, decarbonization, biodiversity protection, and sustainable resource use, aligned with international frameworks like the Paris Agreement.
Mexican Congress Moves Toward Green Future
WRI Mexico and the Chamber of Deputies signed an agreement to decarbonize the Legislative Palace of San Lázaro, aiming to transform it into the most sustainable building in Mexico through energy efficiency, water management, and plastic waste reduction. The project’s initial phase will involve a comprehensive assessment of the building’s energy use, emissions, water consumption, and mobility requirements, laying the foundation for an environmental agenda aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. This initiative not only aims to reduce carbon emissions by 2050 but also seeks to inspire other institutions to adopt sustainable practices, contributing to Mexico’s broader climate commitments.
PEMEX Makes Progress in Sustainability Goals: CA100+
Investors from the Climate Action 100+ (CA100+) initiative are optimistic about PEMEX’s advances in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, following the release of its first Sustainability Plan, which sets ambitious targets including net-zero emissions by 2050 and a 30% reduction in methane emissions by 2030. Since joining CA100+’s focus list in 2020, PEMEX has improved communication with investors, established a Sustainability Committee, and achieved significant advancements in CA100+’s Net Zero Company Benchmark, with seven out of ten key indicators validated in 2024.
Merco Releases Mexico’s 2024 ESG Rankings
Merco released its 2024 ranking of Mexico’s 100 most responsible ESG companies, with Grupo Bimbo leading across all three categories: environmental responsibility, social performance, and ethical governance. BBVA, Grupo Modelo, Google, and Nestlé also secured top positions, while notable shifts included Natura, Heineken, and L’Oréal dropping in the rankings. New entrants such as Alpura, Volaris, and Scotiabank highlight evolving trends in corporate responsibility.
LATAM Airlines Named Among World's Most Sustainable Airlines
LATAM Airlines Group has been named the most sustainable airline in the Americas and fifth globally in S&P Global’s Sustainability Yearbook 2025, ranking among only six airlines included worldwide. The company’s sustainability strategy focuses on Climate Change, Circular Economy, and Shared Value, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050, eliminating single-use plastics, and significantly reducing landfill waste. Notable achievements include offsetting over 1.9Mt of CO2, conserving 300,000ha of Colombian savannas, cutting 97% of single-use plastics, and supporting humanitarian efforts through its AviON Solidario program.
