Water Crisis in CDMX, EdoMex / Alejandro Mayorkas Impeached
The National Water Commission (CONAGUA) is working with the governments of Mexico City and the State of Mexico amid water scarcity. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador explained that coordination is already underway between the governments of Mexico City and the State of Mexico to address water scarcity in the Valley of Mexico. The actions to be undertaken include the repair of well equipment to extract water.
Mexico City is not the only state suffering from a water shortage crisis. According to reports from CONAGUA, 82% of Mexico’s territory could be affected.
The 210 principal dams, which store 92% of water in the country's reservoirs, have experienced a 26% decrease in availability (compared to the historical average), for a total available amount of 64,933 million m3 of water, reports CONAGUA.
There is also a rainfall deficit of 5.4mm, 24.5% below average rate. The country’s water reservoirs stand at about 51% storage, and only eight dams in the country are at 100% full capacity, according to the commission.
The dams facing the greatest threats are: Aguas del Valle de Mexico Basin Organization, the Baja California Peninsula Basin Organization, the Northern Gulf Basin Organization, and the Southern Pacific Basin Organization. Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (SMN) indicated that extreme and exceptional drought conditions are affecting 28.79% of the country, and that moderate and severe drought has increased substantially in Mexico City.
Impeachment Against Alejandro Mayorkas. President López Obrador referred to the impeachment of US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas as mere propaganda, stating that the official is not to blame for the increase in migration. He urged US officials to approve support for Central America and the Caribbean.
"Yesterday, unjustly, but due to political reasons, they tried to impeach Mayorkas; they impeached or approved an impeachment, but that is propaganda because he is not to blame. If they truly care about the problems affecting both countries, in the case of migration, why would they not approve support for Central American countries?" said López Obrador.
The US House of Representatives, where Republicans hold a narrow majority, approved impeachment against Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday for the migration crisis at the Mexico-US border.
