The Present and Future of Generative AI in Mexico
STORY INLINE POST
It is undeniable that generative artificial intelligence has emerged as a transformative force with an increasing impact on the global business landscape — and Mexico is no exception. We are at a pivotal moment where this technology is already leaving a significant mark on the region, with the potential to redefine productivity and create substantial economic value.
Globally, projections from our “2024 AI Sprinters” study indicate that widespread adoption of generative AI could drive a 1.4% increase in labor productivity. However, for Mexico and the broader Latin America region, the implications are even greater. Full adoption of digital technologies, including artificial intelligence and cloud computing, could generate up to US$3.4 trillion in annual economic impact by 2030, according to the same study. This figure highlights the magnitude of the opportunity available to companies that strategically integrate these tools into their operations.
A distinctive factor in our region is the exceptional optimism toward artificial intelligence. According to the “Our Life with AI” study commissioned by Ipsos, 70% of the Latin American population believes that AI will bring tangible benefits to people, significantly surpassing the global average of 59%. This positive outlook not only facilitates the adoption of new technologies but also creates a fertile environment for AI-driven experimentation and innovation.
Today, we are already witnessing concrete examples of how leading companies in Mexico are leveraging AI to transform their businesses. In the financial sector, a bank in Mexico has managed to reduce credit onboarding response times by over 90% thanks to generative AI. This drastic improvement in operational efficiency translates into a better customer experience and greater agility for the institution. Similarly, another financial entity in the country has optimized its document review process, reducing it from a week to less than two hours using AI solutions.
In retail, one of the largest digital retail companies in Latin America is focusing on improving search accuracy, preventing fraudulent activities, and streamlining information validation processes through generative AI. This direct application of AI not only enhances the user experience but also protects the integrity of the platform. Meanwhile, a Mexican fintech company has launched an AI-powered virtual financial assistant that answers user questions and provides personalized financial advice within its app, democratizing access to relevant financial information.
Digital infrastructure plays a crucial role in supporting these growing AI workloads. The availability of robust and scalable cloud infrastructure in Latin America — with regions in Brazil, Chile, and Mexico — is essential to ensure performance, low latency, and security for AI applications. This infrastructure allows companies to access the necessary computing power without large upfront hardware investments.
However, technology alone is not enough. Developing local talent and democratizing knowledge about AI are key pillars for long-term success. Significant efforts are underway to collaborate with more educational institutions in the region on AI and cloud technology
training initiatives. A recent Google study commissioned by Ipsos reveals that cloud learning in the Americas is vital for talent to seize opportunities, linking 80% of training to employment and 90% to innovation.
Looking ahead, innovations in AI models and platforms continue at an accelerated pace. Our most advanced model family, Gemini, offers enhanced reasoning capabilities, which are crucial for enterprise trust and compliance. Likewise, new platforms are making it easier to develop and deploy generative AI across various formats, including video, images, voice, and music.
The concept of AI agents is also gaining momentum as a means to automate complex tasks and improve access to information. Corporate AI platforms like Agentspace aim to simplify the creation and adoption of these agents, enabling employees to access relevant information and automate workflows. The ability to build and manage multi-agent systems, where multiple AI agents collaborate to solve complex problems — even using different frameworks or providers — represents a significant evolution in how AI can tackle business challenges.
It is critical to approach the development and deployment of AI with a strong focus on ethics and responsibility. This involves considering potential risks and working toward the creation of tools and safeguards to prevent misuse of the technology, particularly in areas such as AI-generated misinformation.
Looking forward, generative AI has the potential to radically transform a wide range of industries. It can enable leaders and their organizations to achieve greater operational efficiency, make more data-driven decisions, and deliver highly personalized experiences to customers. Continued collaboration among organizations, the promotion of innovation, and investment in talent development will be fundamental for Mexico to forge its own successful path in the era of artificial intelligence.
The present in our country is full of opportunity thanks to generative artificial intelligence. With palpable local optimism, a growing digital infrastructure, and a focus on talent development, Mexico is well positioned to fully harness the transformative potential of AI to drive productivity, innovation, and economic growth in the coming years.
